Peter Lucas , M.D.
Board-Certified Psychiatrist
Dr. Lucas attended Northwestern University for his undergraduate and Masters degrees and then received his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University. His psychiatric residency was at the University of California, San Diego, followed by a research fellowship at the National Institute of Mental Health.
During his career he has worn many hats: a teacher, researcher, administrator, and clinician. It is in the clinical arena that he has the most experience and which he values most. He greatly enjoys getting to know patients and helping them with their mental health and life challenges. He believes that not only is it important to treat distressing symptoms, but also to help them have fulfilling and meaningful lives. So, while medications can provide significant relief, therapy, psychoeducation, and support can also be very constructive and aid in recovery.
He is very experienced in prescribing medications but also utilizes interventions such as cognitive behavioral therapy(CBT), Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness, motivational interviewing, and lifestyle coaching. He treats adolescents, adults, and seniors with the full range of diagnoses, such as mood disorders, anxiety, psychosis, substance use disorders, and cognitive impairments. Treatment is tailored to the individual, not just diagnosis.
