Dr. Colyar is a Licensed Psychologist and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with over 35
years of experience in delivering mental health services to individuals and families from diverse
age, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds. His expertise encompasses the treatment of a broad
spectrum of major psychiatric disorders, employing a supportive, empowering, and
psychoeducational approach to treatment. He finds it particularly rewarding to assist clients in
developing coping skills for grief, relationship challenges, and life disturbances associated with
adjustment, stress, anxiety, or mood disorders. In marital and family treatment, he specializes in
enhanced communication training, relationship building, conflict resolution, and parent
effectiveness training.
A significant segment of his current practice is dedicated to providing counseling for
professionals that address workplace and professional challenges. This includes skills
development in areas such as enhancing professional confidence, effective communication,
networking, work-life balance, goal setting, and time management. He is committed to helping
clients navigate and thrive within today’s organizational and corporate environments.
He specializes in evidence-based methodologies, including behavioral and cognitive
techniques, mindfulness and mindfulness meditation training, and positive psychology
approaches. His background experience also includes 15 years of undergraduate and graduate
university teaching of Psychology and Mental Health Counseling as a full-time and associate
faculty member, with a principal focus on teaching mental health counseling, positive
psychology, and psychopathology courses.
