Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor

Dr. Joel M. Filmore is an accomplished therapist with a robust academic foundation. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Illinois at Chicago (2006), followed by a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology from Roosevelt University (2010). His quest for knowledge culminated with a Doctor of Education in Counselor Education and Supervision from Northern Illinois University (2014). Dr. Filmore’s licensing credentials span five states: Illinois, Wisconsin, Vermont, South Carolina, and Florida.

His clinical expertise encompasses a wide range of areas, from affective disorders like depression and anxiety to trauma recovery, couples and family counseling, LGBTQIA+ challenges, and addiction management. Furthermore, he’s on the path to becoming a recognized couple’s specialist, currently training with the esteemed Gottman Institute. Apart from his hands-on work, Dr. Filmore has co-edited pivotal books, such as “Affirmative Counseling with LGBTQIA+ People” and “Introduction to 21st Century Counseling: A Multicultural and Social Justice Perspective,” complemented by several other articles and publications.

In the therapy room, Dr. Filmore’s approach is direct and assertive. Clients often commend his dynamic involvement, describing him as an “actively challenging” professional rather than a passive listener. Although his foundation lies in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dr. Filmore leverages his 13 years of experience as a Professor teaching advanced therapists to seamlessly blend a multitude of evidence-based techniques, ensuring tailored interventions that align with each client’s unique journey and goals.
